The Sapotaweyak Cree Nation and Pelican Rapids have challenges in developing economic activities but, have long term initiatives to develop businesses and theircommunities. The areas have established Ecotourism, Tourism, Commercial Fishing and Non-Timber Forest Productions (one of Cedar Lake CFDC’s sponsorships). The Non-Timber Forest Industry creates natural products for everyday living. Three women, sponsored by Cedar Lake CFDC, from these areas, undertook the training, for Non-Timber Forest Productions. Currently the three women are utilizing their training and skills to assist in their Community’s economic growth (Ecotourism, Non-Timber Forest Productions). Sapotaweyak Cree Nation has a population of 836 residents. Mafeking is largely composed of Logging, Tourism, Outfitting, Service, Commercial Fishing, Cattle and Agriculture in their Economic Development Activities. Mafeking’s Community has several government sponsored jobs such as the Department of Highways and Natural Resources. There are a few businesses, including a hotel/restaurant and two service stations. Mafeking is a small community but has a Legion Hall (used for all the community’s services), a new shell for an arena and two baseball diamonds. Mafeking has a population of 107 residents. Dawson Bay is home to Commercial Fishing. Dawson Bay hosts the office for the Manitoba Fisherman’s Association. Dawson Bay overlooks Lake Winnepegosis, which provides the Commercial Fisherman with their livelihoods as well as cattle production. Dawson Bay has 10 Commercial Boats and has a population of 25 residents. |
